This Monday night sees the two sides who were battling it out for last season’s Premier League title go head to head at the Etihad Stadium as Manchester City host Liverpool.  Having played out two superb games during the 2013/14 campaign, these sides look set to serve up yet another classic encounter. Both City and Liverpool got the new season under way with important victories and both Brendan Rodgesr and Manuel Pellegrini will be desperate to maintain 100% records for as long as possible.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini seemed to place little importance on the Community Shield, a match where City were soundly beaten by FA Cup winners Arsenal.  The reigning Premier League champions quickly got back on track, and opened their title defence with a comfortable 2-0 win at Newcastle this past Sunday.  Although I feel City’s main focus this term will be the Champions League, they are obviously going to once again be competitive in the Premiership.  Whether their Champions League ambitions will take the edge off their domestic performances later in the season remains to be seen but they certainly looked as efficient as ever at the Sports Direct Arena.

Six new additions to the squad will add yet more depth to Pellegrini’s options and this club have without doubt the biggest wealth of riches in the land and the arrival of Frank Lampard on loan is definitely an interesting acquisition. Raheem Sterling is improving week on week and he will be a massive part of this Liverpool revolution under Rodgers for the foreseeable future.  Liverpool did not have the distraction of European football to contend with last year but they now have the depth in their squad to cope with more games and I don’t really see it having a detrimental effect on their league form.  England forward Daniel Sturridge is the shortest price of the away team’s players to score first in this game, with the former Chelsea man on offer at 7/1 with Coral.  Captain Steven Gerrard is a best price of 14/1 to find the net first with Irish bookmaker Paddy Power.
