This Monday night sees the two sides who were battling it out for last season’s Premier League title go head to head at the Etihad Stadium as Manchester City host Liverpool. Having played out two superb games during the 2013/14 campaign, these sides look set to serve up yet another classic encounter. Both City and Liverpool got the new season under way with important victories and both Brendan Rodgesr and Manuel Pellegrini will be desperate to maintain 100% records for as long as possible.
Man City are understandably favourites due to their excellent home record but Liverpool were arguably unlucky to get beaten here last year when they went down by two goals to one. Boylesports go best price about a City victory with the Sky Blues available at odds of 20/23. Coral and Stan James are both best odds for Liverpool, with 10/3 available, while those of you looking to back the draw should take the 11/4 at William Hill.
Man City 20/23 (Boylesports)
Liverpool 10/3 (Coral, Stan James)
Draw 11/4 (William Hill)
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini seemed to place little importance on the Community Shield, a match where City were soundly beaten by FA Cup winners Arsenal. The reigning Premier League champions quickly got back on track, and opened their title defence with a comfortable 2-0 win at Newcastle this past Sunday. Although I feel City’s main focus this term will be the Champions League, they are obviously going to once again be competitive in the Premiership. Whether their Champions League ambitions will take the edge off their domestic performances later in the season remains to be seen but they certainly looked as efficient as ever at the Sports Direct Arena.
Six new additions to the squad will add yet more depth to Pellegrini’s options and this club have without doubt the biggest wealth of riches in the land and the arrival of Frank Lampard on loan is definitely an interesting acquisition. Lamps can be backed at 12/1 with Paddy Power to be first goalscorer this Monday night and the free kick specialist is bound to come in for support. Favourite to open the scoring is Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero is available at 9/2 with William Hill.
The loss of Luis Suarez is definitely going to dent Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League this season, but Brendan Rodgers has made some very astute signings during the summer months to try and cushion the blow. Eight players have made their way to Anfield, including half the Southampton squad! While I feel that the club may have paid slightly over the odds to capture some of these player’s signatures, there is no doubt that the Liverpool squad is vastly improved since the previous campaign.
Raheem Sterling is improving week on week and he will be a massive part of this Liverpool revolution under Rodgers for the foreseeable future. Liverpool did not have the distraction of European football to contend with last year but they now have the depth in their squad to cope with more games and I don’t really see it having a detrimental effect on their league form. England forward Daniel Sturridge is the shortest price of the away team’s players to score first in this game, with the former Chelsea man on offer at 7/1 with Coral. Captain Steven Gerrard is a best price of 14/1 to find the net first with Irish bookmaker Paddy Power.
If you fancy both teams to score in this Monday night football clash, the best odds available are 8/13 with bet365. Both teams not to score can be backed at 5/4 with Betfred.
I fancy both teams to score, but Manchester City may just be able to get the better of Liverpool with the all important home advantage. City’s record at the Etihad is truly outstanding and although I expect Liverpool to put up a gallant fight, Manchester City can make it two wins from two in the Premier League here.
A repeat of last season’s 2-1 scoreline looks the most likely outcome, and I’ll be having a small interest on that result at 8/1 with bet365.
Back Manchester City to win 2-1 at 8/1 with bet365
Back BTTS at 8/13 with bet365
